CBN (CANNABINOL)

CBN (cannabinol) is one of hundreds of cannabinoids identified in hemp and cannabis plants. Cannabinoids are chemicals that are able to interact with receptors in the body, known as the endocannabinoid system. CBN does not biosynthesise in the hemp plant like most phytocannabinoids, it occurs naturally when THC is broken down, a process that can be drying or heating. It is then isolated by extraction processes followed by various refining processes. Research shows that, unlike THC, CBN is not psychotropic. Interestingly, CBN was the first phytocannabinoid to be identified and isolated from the Cannabis sativa plant in the 1940s, before THC and CBD.

While CBN has been studied much less than CBD, early results are promising with the majority of studies still in the preclinical or animal phase. As with CBG, producing large quantities of CBN is not easy, which is probably one reason why it has not been researched as much as CBD. The popularity of CBD products has exploded, with many people using CBD products to reduce anxiety symptoms or to help manage chronic pain. Studies on the potential benefits of CBN suggest that it can reduce pain, aid sleep, act as a sedative, antispasmodic, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and appetite stimulant. More extensive studies are needed to discover its full effects.

What are the benefits and uses of CBN?

There is relevant and positive information in scientific articles about some of the health benefits of CBN. Here are some of its uses:

Soothing/Alerting:

According to Steep Hill Labs' studies, taking 2.5mg and 5mg of CBN produces the same sedative effect as 5mg and 10mg of diazepam, a mild sedative drug. Research on mice has shown that CBN can prolong sleep time. Some research shows that the sedative effects of CBN are enhanced when combined with THC. However, at the moment there is no scientific research on the sleep inducing properties of CBN.

Appetite stimulant:

The appetite stimulant properties of THC are well documented with the downside being that the compound induces psychotropic side effects. Only in 2012, it was discovered that CBN also stimulates the appetite, although this effect does not appear to be as strong as with THC. The study led the researchers to conclude that CBN could in the future be an alternative to THC without the unwanted side effects.

Analgesic:

They found that both CBD and CBN can reduce myofascial pain in rats. The combination of CBN and CBD was even more effective than either alone.2019 rat study Trusted Source

Anti-inflammatory:

Many cannabinoids have been linked to anti-inflammatory properties, including CBN. A 2016 rodent study showed that CBN reduced arthritis-related inflammation in rats.

Antibacterial:

The antibacterial effects of cannabinol were demonstrated in a study conducted in Italy in 2008. The results showed that CBN showed "strong activity on drug-resistant MRSA bacteria when applied topically. It also shows promise in topical application for the treatment of burns and psoriasis. The study found that CBN can kill these bacteria, which are generally resistant to a wide range of antibiotics.

Neuroprotective:

Protects nerve cells and slows neurodegenerative processes. A studyDating back to 2005 found that CBN delayed the development of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) in rats. They concluded that treatment with 5 mg/kg per day significantly delayed the onset of the disease by more than two weeks.

CBN has no known side effects, but that does not mean that they do not exist. CBN has simply not been studied enough to know. It is known that CBD interacts with certain drugs, especially those drugs with a " grapefruit warning ". However, it is not known whether this applies to CBN.
